不少人称武汉为江湖大城，除了归因于武汉多江多湖，水域面积占总面积四分之一，也源于其总面积紧追中国各大一线城市。然而，更贴合“江湖”二字的，是武汉人浓厚的江湖气——那种直来直往、敢爱敢恨、好打交道的个性，成了这片楚文化发祥地在黄鹤楼、热干面与鸭脖之外的另一鲜明标志。
Wuhan is widely known as a big city of “jianghu” (rivers and lakes) due to the extensive water systems covering 25 percents of the entire municipal area, which is almost as big as many first-tier cities in China. However, the zealous jianghu or brotherhood spirit of Wuhan people—the straightforward, daring and easy-going personalities—relates better to the word jianghu, and becomes a distinctive characteristic of this city where Chu culture originated, besides the popular Yellow Crane Tower, hot dry noodles and duck neck.
